The best coconut snacks — and worst

Apologies to those who hate coconut. This taste-off is for those of us who crave the sweet, nutty flavor and welcome it served every which way — in pudding, ice cream, candy and cookies. A little coconut is good, but more is so much better.

Coconut, which is a fruit — not a nut — is wildly versatile and distinctly unique, in part because of its high fat content. Pressed coconut makes a great substitute for cream, milk and butter, making it a great go-to for those on vegan and gluten-free diets.

For this feature, we rounded up all manner of coconut snacks, including bites, clusters, rolls and balls. Some look like cookies. Others look like candy or cereal, but all of them use coconut as a main ingredient and all are gluten-free.

Great coconut snacks are minimally sweet, crispy or chewy and delicious enough to make you want more. The bad ones are tough, sticky, stale, flavorless or all of the above.

Here’s the scoop on the best coconut treats — and those best left in the bag. Nutrition details refer to a 28 to 30 gram serving.

Laughing Giraffe Organics Lemon Snakaroons

These soft, moist, bite-size balls rolled in coconut are packed with juicy Meyer lemon flavor. 140 cal, 11 g fat, 15 mg sodium, 7 g sugar, 1 g protein. $6.49 for 6 ounces at Sprouts. 4 stars

Hippie Snacks Organic Coconut Clusters

Crispy slivers of coconut and sesame seeds make for an addictive snack. These are toasted to perfection. 160 calories, 10 g fat, 75 mg sodium, 7 g sugar, 3 g protein. Emmy’s Organic Vanilla Bean Coconut Cookies

Big vanilla flavor and fresh, chewy coconut make for a tender, delicious bite. These are a bit crumbly, but worth the mess. 150 calories, 12 g fat, no sodium, 9 g sugar, 2 g protein.

$5.99 for 6 ounces at Whole Foods. 3.5 stars

Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Coconut Clusters

Way too much salt kills the deal on these otherwise promising crispy bites. 160 calories, 13 g fat, 150mg sodium, 5 g sugar, 2 g protein. $2.99 for 3.2 ounces at Whole Foods. 2 stars
